Table tennis was India’s sixth most successful sport at the Commonwealth Games after shooting, weightlifting, wrestling, boxing and badminton. On a global level, Indian paddlers have shown their skills and presence to all other dominant countries. Since 2002, Indians have won numerous medals in table tennis events at the Commonwealth Games. India’s strong table tennis contingent is ready to show off their skills at the upcoming Commonwealth Games scheduled to take place in Birmingham from July 28, 2022.
When did table tennis make its Commonwealth Games debut?
Table tennis was added to the CWG in 2002, where India won three bronze medals in that edition. So far, India has earned a good reputation with 20 medals including 6 gold medals.
Medals won by Indian table tennis players at the Commonwealth Games
2002 Commonwealth Games, Manchester
India won three bronze medals that year. Chetan Baboor took bronze in the event. In men’s doubles, the duo of Subramaniam Raman and Chetan Baboor secured third place.
Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games
A young boy from Chennai, Sharath Kamal won India’s first gold medal in table tennis. In the men’s team, Sharath Kamal, Shibaji Datta, Soumyadeep Roy and Subhajit Saha secured first place in the final and won gold medals. In the women’s team event, Kasturi Chakraborty, Poulomi Ghatak, Mouma Das, Nandita Saha and Shamini Kumaresan won the bronze medal.
2010 Commonwealth Games, New Delhi
The pair of Sharath Kamal and Subhajit Saha have won gold in India’s most successful CWG campaign. Mouma Das and Poulomi Ghatak received bronze in the women’s doubles on home turf. India has won a total of 5 medals in table tennis. In the men’s individual event, Sharath took bronze.
Commonwealth Games 2014, Glasgow
A huge setback for the Indian paddlers as only one medal was won by the Indian contingents. The pair of Sharath Kamal and Anthony Amalraj managed to clinch silver in the men’s doubles event.
Commonwealth Games 2018, Golden Coast
In women’s singles, Manika Batra’s masterful performance in Gold Coast made her the first Indian woman to win a CWG gold medal in the women’s singles event. In men’s doubles, Harmeet Desai and Sanil Shetty took the bronze medal while the women’s pair of Manika Batra and Mouma Das were able to take silver.
