As part of a huge funding increase for sports and recreation facilities in Indigo, the Council is set to receive more than $850,000 through the state government’s Local Sports Infrastructure Fund.
The Chiltern tennis courts will be revamped, a pump track installed at Wahgunyah and Tangambalanga Active Park and lighting will be improved at Baarmutha Park in Beechworth. In addition, Butson Park in Yackandandah will receive funding for the planning and design of the redevelopment of its facilities.
Mayor Bernard Gaffney says the funding is great news for these communities, with these projects high on their list of priorities.
“We know our small, rural communities rely heavily on sports and recreation facilities to encourage a sense of community, provide options to keep them healthy, social and active, and to attract newcomers to the area.
“To see these fantastic community facilities upgraded and built is a brilliant result for which we are very grateful. »
Cr Gaffney said it was particularly exciting to see the funding distributed across the County, meaning most communities will benefit.
“We are still hoping for the success of the funding, but we recognize that is not always the case, so having such a large cross section of our county to qualify for this funding is a real win.”
Five of Indigo Shire’s six applications in this round of funding have been successful, with Council staff currently working with Sport and Recreation Victoria and the unsuccessful applicant to increase their chances of success in future rounds of funding.
A full breakdown of funding for each project is as follows:
Chiltern Tennis Courts Redevelopment – $300,000
Tangambalanga Active Park Pump Track – $150,000
Wahgunyah pump track – $150,000
Baarmutha Park Floodlighting Project – $220,313
Butson Park Sports Facility Redevelopment Planning and Design – $30,000
