Serena and Venus Williams have called their description of their tennis stardom in a major new film starring Will Smith “surreal”.
Smith plays the role of Richard Williams, who, despite having no experience in sports and very limited financial resources, has guided his daughters to unprecedented success.
The Williams family have been heavily involved in the development and production of King Richard, which will be released on November 19, with Serena and Venus’ sister, Isha Price, one of the executive producers.
Speaking at a Warner Bros press conference, Serena said, “No word describes it better than surreal. Just to see these amazing actresses and everyone behind it all telling about our dad’s journey, but, because of me and my sister, it’s really like, ‘Wow, okay, really. ? Are we really something? ‘
“Then for Will to play that role as my dad and the way he just played Richard Williams, it took the whole movie to a whole new level. It’s so emotional, it’s well done. and it is brilliant work.
Serena is played by Demi Singleton, 14, and Venus, by Saniyya Sidney, 15, and the film, directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, shows the period of their lives from their debut on the run-down Compton courts. at the first steps of Venus in professional football.
Singleton and Sidney both learned to play tennis for the film, with left-hander Sidney having to master the sport in right-hander to portray Venus.
Venus said, “It’s super emotional. I saw the trailer, I read the script, and every time I watch it, it brings tears to my eyes.
“I think it was amazing to see the family atmosphere on set and how Demi and Saniyya really acted like Serena and I, even when the cameras weren’t rolling, like holding hands, and it was so. kind.
“I’m really proud of what everyone has accomplished. It’s pretty surreal to be honest and they really understood our family and portrayed us in a way that was truly us and I’m very proud of it.
Smith has revealed that he first discovered Richard Williams when he saw her criticize a reporter during an interview with Venus when she was a young teenager more than 25 years ago.
“I saw this in real time and the look on Venus’s face, this image burned in my heart because that’s what I wanted my daughter to look like when I introduced myself,” Smith said.
“And this interview had really changed my parenthood back then. It was like she had a lion and she was so confident and at ease that her lion wouldn’t let anything happen to her.
“I fell in love with Richard Williams. It was about twenty years ago and when the opportunity to be part of this project presented itself, it was the first thing I remembered. I knew I wanted to show the world a father protecting a girl like that.
