CLEVELAND — If the weather is nice over the weekend, you’ll likely find Jordi Brunet Espuela on the beach with his family.
He is the founder of the Cleveland Beach Tennis Club.
As its name suggests, beach tennis is a cross between traditional tennis, badminton and beach volleyball.
“You play doubles, two against two,” said Brunet Espuela. “Basically the ball can’t touch the ground and the pace is very fast in this sport.
Brunet Espuela hails from Barcelona, Spain and he first discovered the sport while visiting Italy, which is home to some of the best players in the sport.
“I’m just in love with it and couldn’t stop playing,” he said. “I said to my wife when we were going back to America, I said ‘OK, I have to bring this sport, I want to play.'”
This is how he founded the Cleveland Beach Tennis Club.
“People I know here love beach volleyball,” he said. “Because of this hybrid, I thought people would like it.”
The sport is rapidly gaining popularity around the world, and Brunet Espuela explained that it is suitable for most people, even children.
