Tennis players from the West and the South dominate CIC championships

The West Eagles celebrated three champions and the South Wolverines returned home with two Saturday at the Cook Inlet Conference tennis championships at Alaska Club East.

Defending state singles champions Charlie Rush and Athena Clendaniel won the conference titles and Eva Lief and Antonia Yu won the women’s doubles title for West.

South’s winners were Walker Brown and Aaron Griffin in men’s doubles and Dani Jameson and Ryder Skaaren in mixed doubles.

Rush defeated Ulysses Escobar of Service 6-4, 6-0 in the boys’ singles final. Clendaniel won the girls title by default against her teammate Sophia Green.

Lief and Yu clinched a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Dimond’s Meghan Spils and Laney Fagerstrom in the women’s doubles final, and Walker and Brown beat Dimond’s Joe Butzke and Jin Mateaki 6-1, 6-4 in the men’s doubles final.

In mixed doubles, South’s Jameson and Skaaren held on to a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Allya Pedalino and Toby Lochner of Service.

The state champions will be crowned next week in a three-day meet that begins Thursday at the Alaska Club East.
