MAN TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Franco Capalbo, So., UTAH (Buenos Aires, Argentina)

  • Playing No. 1 in singles, the Utah captain notched the sixth straight win for the Utes and went 4-0 this week, earning the deciding point in both Utah wins over UC Santa Barbara ( 4-1) and Loyola Marymount (4-3).
  • The sophomore’s biggest win came in a 3-3 draw against LMU as he beat Rana-Roop Bhullar (7-6(4), 6-4) to lift the Utes to 6-0.
  • Associated with Bruno Caula, Capalbo won both doubles matches against UCSB (6-3) and LMU (6-4).

FEMALE TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Nika Zupancic, Sr., WASHINGTON (Otocec, Slovenia)

  • Won a pair of singles and doubles matches against Denver then-No. 4 UCLA to help Washington progress through the ITA Kickoff Weekend Qualifiers to compete in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships for the first time since 2011.
  • Earned the Huskies’ first-ever road win over the Bruins with a three-set upset over No. 49 Sasha Vagramov; the 4-3 victory marked the UW’s first against UCLA since 2003 and only the third in program history.
  • The upset marked her first singles victory against a top 50 player.
  • Zupancic’s four wins were needed as Washington beat Denver, 4-3, in the first round before eliminating the Bruins.
  • Now 5-0 in doubles, all at No. 3 position in singles.
