Big Rapids Tennis Players Earn All-State Honors

BIG RAPIDS — Big Rapids tennis coach Austin Brinker announced that Owen Westerkamp and Nathan Sanders have both received All-State singles recognition from Michigan High School Tennis Coaches.

Westerkamp played No. 1 singles with a 22-15 record, with key wins over St. Francis, Allegan and Glen Lake.

“Owen has made huge leaps this season with his point build and mental game,” Big Rapids coach Austin Brinker said. “There were many times when Owen was dragging or not playing well, he made adjustments during the game, executed his game plan, refocused and ended up turning the game around.

“The growth I’ve seen from Owen as a tennis player and as a person this fall is remarkable.”

Sanders played singles No. 2, going 30-7, with key wins over St Francis in the regional finals, Unity Christian and Whitehall.

“Nate was seeded second in the state tournament, earning the highest seed ever recorded by the Big Rapids tennis program,” Brinker said. “Nate made the transition this season from doubles to singles and he didn’t skip a beat. He just used his doubles prowess, big serve, net play and consistency to frustrate his opponents. Once that Nate found his groove midway through the season, he was one of the top 2 singles players in the state, regardless of division.

“I couldn’t be prouder of Owen and Nate. They’ve come a long way since their freshman years. Their hard work, dedication and determination has gotten them to this point. Big Rapids has never seen multiple singles players earning accolades in all states in the same season. They deserve this accomplishment and I can’t wait to see what they can do next fall.
