Latvia’s hopes for a medal in the women’s singles tennis competition at the Tokyo Olympics were dashed early with first-round losses for Aļona (Jelena) Ostapenko and Anastasija Sevastova.
Ostapenko lost to Russian Olympic Committee (KOK) player Yelena Vesina on Sunday, after Sevastova had already lost to France’s Fiona Ferro. The duo then teamed up in the doubles competition but also lost their first match, bringing Latvia’s participation in tennis prematurely to an end.
Disappointment also for Latvian air pistol shooting champion Agate Rašmane, who failed to make the top eight in the qualifying round of the 10-meter shooting competition and therefore will not qualify for the final.
There was better news for the Latvian 3X3 basketball team who, in their third match at the Tokyo Olympics, beat the Chinese national team with 18:17. It was Latvia’s second victory and keeps them in the tournament.
In the first match, Latvia beat Poland 21:14, but in the second match lost to Belgium 20:21.
Later Sunday, a game with the Japanese hosts is scheduled. It will start at 4:25 p.m. Latvian time and can be watched live on LTV7 and the Latvian portal of LSM.lv from Latvia.
